A Massive Online Open Course on Multidisciplinary Approaches to Risk
What is risk? To what extent is risk acceptable? Does ‘perceived risk’ correspond to ‘real risk’? How to deal with the public’s perceptions of risks, safety and security? How much should we, and are we willing to invest to counter risk? And: What kinds of new security and safety approaches can be created within the changing legal and sociopolitical framework of a risk-averse society? These questions are all necessary to consider as – for example – our political, digital, health and industrial infrastructures expand and become increasingly at risk.
This project will create a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Risk in Modern Society. The goal of this MOOC is to (a) shed light on risk from various disciplinary perspectives, (b) share cutting-edge academic approaches to risk with a wide academic and non-academic community and (c) increase LDE inter-university collaborations between experts on safety and security.
By making use of domain expertise of academics affiliated at the three universities, this project exploits the unique features and characteristics of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus alliance. In undertaking this joint LDE project, this MOOC will meet the LDE objectives in (a) setting up and making visible a joint, multidisciplinary CSS project; (b) reflect on innovative safety and security solutions to deal with pressing societal problems; (c) develop integrated safety and security education at each of the three universities; and (d) provide multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art insights from the LDE community to society.
The structure of the MOOC will be based upon seven distinctive modules that will provide students with an interdisciplinary perspective on cutting-edge research on various types of risk and dealing with risk, in multiple professional and academic fields. Each module will be devoted to a particular aspect of risk, reflecting the fields of expertise of each individual partner, who will contribute by featuring in an 8-minute video lecture.
This LDE project will result in a 7-module Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Risk in Modern Society, which will be made available online via the Coursera platform. Each module will feature short, 8-minute multimedia video lectures from TU Delft, Leiden University and Erasmus University academic experts combined with online assignments, discussion boards, and quizzes.
With partners from TU Delft, Erasmus University and Leiden University, this project seeks to continue the LDE tradition of bottom-up collaborations between excellent research groups. By having the possibility to incorporate this MOOC in our teaching, we can offer innovative, attractive and more multidisciplinary education. The quality of each of these partners, their complementarity and physical closeness offer unique opportunities to establish and intensify structural collaboration.
This project is funded by the LDE Centre for Safety and Security (2016), and will be developed in close collaboration with the Centre for Innovation of Leiden University.
Enrollment for the online course Risk in Modern Society' is now open. The first lecture will be online on Monday, January 29. The course takes place in a total of 5 weeks and is taught by teachers connected to the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Safety and Security.
