Prof. Van Gelder (TU Delft) gives an overall view of the scientific research questions in the domain of natural disasters, followed by a presentation from the Ministry of Security and Justice by Mrs. Wamsteker on how the system of safety regions in the Netherlands is organized and how disaster - and safety policies are defined. Finally, Prof. Visscher (EUR) provides a Law and Economic perspective on financial compensation for victims of natural disasters.

The goal of the colloquium is to discuss the domain of natural hazards from three different angles; from a technical perspective, from an organisational management perspective, and from a legal economy perspective. Interdependencies between these angles and ideas for further elaboration will be explored.

14.00 – 14.30u:            Crisis management in the Netherlands, Mrs. Nicolien Wamsteker,
                                     Senior policy manager, Ministry of Security and Justice, The Hague.
14.30 – 14.45u:            Break
14.45 – 15.15u:           Liability and compensation for natural disasters - a legal economy
                                     perspective , Prof. Louis Visscher, Professor of Law and Economics,
                                     Erasmus University,  Rotterdam.
15.15 – 16.00u:            Discussion with audience on propositions by the speakers.
16.00 – 17.00u:            Drinks
